THE VENICE BIENNALE 2003: A "CORD" BETWEEN VENICE AND ELSEWHERE

Between Florence and Venice is born the project The Cord: a network of practicable tunnels in steel - 200 meters of total length - that constitutes the symbol of 50th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale - opened to the public from the 15, June to 2, November. Commissioned by the director Francesco Bonami to Archea Associates and C+S Associates - Laura Andreini, Marco Casamonti, Silvia Fabi, Gianna Parisse, Giovanni Palazzi | Carlo Cappai, Maria Alessandra Segantini, Andrea Bond́ -, The Cord testifies also the re-birth of a new dialogue between the Venice Biennale and the italian territory.

Dreams and Conflicts - The Viewer's Dictatorship is the title of the Venice Biennale 2003 that just with its fiftieth edition propose to take up the challenge of the "molteplicity of cultures and languages" making available to every viewer the opportunities to relase oneself from "the shapeless concept of audience" and to propose - says the director Francisco Bonami - an independent intepretation about the Biennial event.
To interlace the themes of the extension with the physical structure that contains them, this year also the functional elements of the Venice Biennale had been transformed in arts and architecture projects. And, for example, the design of connexions between the several sections of Biennial had engaged the architecture firms of Archea Associates (Florence - Rome) and C+S Associates (Venice).

The Cord is an innovative elaboration of a "connecting module system" able to connect the several espositive centers of the city and also to represent the interactive philosophy of the exhibition. A work not punctually concentrated but "diffused"; a "net" to cable the various places of the Venice Biennale.
A sculptural landmark, an architectonic presence and an umbilical cord between "innner" and "outer" spaces, The Cord is a great practicable conduit relized with modular elements in steel - 3 meters of diameter and 1,25 meters of depth - in which are alterated the usual relationships between customer and information. In fact the viewers are not static observers in front of dynamic contents. The visitors, instead enter within the net of information that the extension develops in its itinerary.

The program of Venice Biennale 2003 is characterized by a series of extensions and previewed exhibits in several venetian centers - Gardens of Biennale, Arsenal, Correr Museum - and also beyond the lagoon borders. Fragments of The Cord, will be installed in the public squares of the main Italian cities where the Biennial will carry the own program. So, the 50th biennial edition, will establish - and for the first the time - a concrete relationship between Venice - terminal of contemporary arts and cultures - and the other Italian centers.

Some exhibits mentioned (in progress...)
Claire Barclay, Jim Lambie and Simon Starling have been chosen to represent Scotland in the exhibition that is part of Zenomap, a presentation of new work from Scotland for this year's Venice Biennale.
Athanasia Kyriakakos and Dimitris Rotsios - architect - are the representatives of the Greek Pavilion with their Intron, an onsite installation examining the real space of dreams.
