 FRAGILE!
FIFTH INTERNATIONAL DESIGN CONTEST TRIESTE CONTEMPORANEA

Running until December 7th at the Scuola del Vetro Abate Zanetti of Murano, the "FRAGILE!" exhibition is the closing event of the Fifth International Design Contest Trieste Contemporanea open to designers of 21 European countries.
The show marks the end of the 2002 edition of the competition which is issued every two years by Trieste Contemporanea, with the support of the Central European Initiative, and addresses designers from Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldavia, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, The Slovak Republic, Romania, Slovenia, Ukraine and Hungary.
In the spotlight at the Murano exhibition were ten works in blown glass executed by Andrea Zilio, master glassblower of the "Anfora" furnace (Murano).
The new format of this edition required the designers to submit their projects only in the form designs on paper. It was then up to the jury to select a short-list of projects which would go on to the next phase of execution of the objects themselves.
The end of October saw the start of the operations at the furnace, with the rare possibility offered to the selected designers to assist in Venice to the execution of their work. The short-listed pieces are now on view for the wider public at the exhibition which will run until December 7th. Among the over 130 projects submitted, the jury, presided by Gillo Dorfles and composed by Rosa Barovier Mentasti, Janez Bogataj, Attilia Dorigato, Marco Romanelli, Giuseppe Ulian, Toni Zuccheri with the technical assistance of Renzo Ferro, selected and decided to have executed the following projects: "Glasblasen" by Claudia Pfleger (A), "Black Wind" by Patrizia Baldan (I), "Fragile Invisibile" by Patrizia Magnani and Giovanni Panizon (I), "Floating Beauty" by Milos Joksimovic (YU), "Sprout" by Gabor Molnar (H) and "Le Corbusier Collection" by Katija Lipicnik (SLO).
A special mention was awarded to "Goota" by the Ukrainian group NCA-New Creative Association Fund (Valentin Rayevsky e Andriy Bokotey). The project, only the original drawings of which of are on display since its oversized scale could not allow for execution, received this special recommendation for its functional use of glass in the field of urban design, which is seldom represented.
The prizes were thus apportioned: the BEBA prize, presented by the Laura und Franz Leupoldt Foundation to the youngest selected designer and offering a workshop in Murano, went to "Smorfie" by Marta Ceruti (I) for its fresh approach to transposing the traditional mark of caricature drawing to glass; the City of Trieste prize, presented by CRTrieste Foundation to the best selected designer from Trieste, went to the Ruggero De Calò, Maurizio Anselmi, Giulio Stagni group for the pure and clean-cut lines of their "Beluga" fish plate. The first prize 2002, worth 2500 Euro, was awarded ex-aequo to Jurij Dobrila (SLO) for "Centroabita" and to Annika Giesbert (D) for "Icebowling". The prize went to the Slovenian designer for a centrepiece which, starting from an archetypal form such as the spiral, lends added value to the collaboration between the master glassblower and the designer; and to the German designer's project for the poetic interpretation of the notion of functionality afforded by the "singular" use of an ice cube as support for a expressly shaped bowl.

Thus arranged, the Venetian exhibition is moved to Trieste, opening at the Revoltella Museum of Trieste on December 11th until January 11th 2003. Thereafter the exhibition will embark on an international tour starting from Budapest, at the Kozep-Europai Kulturalis Intezet (Central European Cultural Institute), early next year. The design competition instead is adjourned to 2004.

The exhibition is organised by Trieste Contemporanea in collaboration with Musei Civici Veneziani-Museo del Vetro di Murano, Scuola del Vetro Abate Zanetti of Murano and Civico Museo Revoltella-Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Trieste, with the partecipation of the Laura und Franz Leupoldt Foundation (Weissenstadt), of Kozep-Europai Kulturalis Intezet-Central European Cultural Institute (Budapest) and of the Camera di Commercio Industria Artigianato Agricoltura of Trieste, under the patronage of C.E.I. (Central European Initiative) and of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the contribution of the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, of the CRTrieste Foundation, of the Commissariato del Governo nella Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia and of the Municipality of Trieste.
