Tom De Vrieze - Director Tovdesign
Tom De Vrieze, born in 1968 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, Europe. A degree in informatics, book-keeping, maths and design. 10 years of experience as a mechanical draughtsman in engineering and construction for industrial companies such as Atlas Copco, Procter and Gamble, Union Miničre, Food Machinery Corperation, Renault Belgium, Renault France, Waterleau.
The design and designing of furniture objects did start in 1996 with the first object 'Secretary', a 360° turnable cabinet was developed. From 1996 until 1999 a few 'common' designobjects were made, but they were mainly made for proper use, no more, no less.
Years did pass by, after many thoughts and analysis, the idea to start a professional company in furniture and industrial design became stronger. So, in June 2002 a company called Tovdesign was founded. In October 2002 a lot of virtual design concepts were put on a website, many international reactions did came. The responses sent by companies, students and others did set up 'a point of view' about design. About what is current on the market, about what people are looking or would like to have. During those next months he visited some professional furniture trades, he exchanged ideas with well-know Belgian designers.
And, ... 2 months later on an orientation was found. Tovdesign started to explore and exploit the principle of Emofurn, a new furniture style, an emotion through a furniture, the user conflicted.
June 2002: Tovdesign company start-up.
October 2002: 'The Shining', an outdoor element was on display in the exhibition during the 18th international biënnale interieur02 in Kortrijk Xpo, Belgium.
December 2002: Emofurn is concepted and born.
January del 2003: Start and implementation of the collection 2003.
April 2003: Collection 2003 launched, in the new gallery; Tovdesign on the cover of the american e-zine www.ionone.com, a design portal.
May 2003: Tovdesign in Design Alert issue 8 of www.designmatcher.com.
August 2003: folding chair 'iwilllofu always forever' developed for the contest 100% folding - chairs - prototyp for designboom.com.
November 2003: Tovdesign will be on display at the Brussels Furniture Fair 2003.
Tovdesign,
is a company that offers know-how and design in furniture domains such as conceptual design, design study, cad-support, prototype building, financial study, serial production, engineering solutions. Tovdesign applies the emofurn principle in their objects.

Mainly Aije represents a range of destressing tools such as Aije Hold Me, Aije de lap e Aije the Sound. Aije, part of Emofurn, the user conflicted.

The history of furniture in levels:
The first level, as functional and static.
The second level, as design, as form, as relative beauty.
The third level, as conflict, as an emotion, emofurn concepted and born.
The first level is basic, and to all people, the first level satisfies, the need to sit, to sleep, to use, there is no need, no demand for more.
The second level demands an explicit and individual need for design, design is born. Still, of course, furniture needs to be static and functional, but design has become primary instead of the practical-static and -funcionality.
The third level is obliged to adhere the other levels. An emotion is built-in, expressions of the contemporary society are enclosed in the objects. Basic emotional human needs are integrated in the furniture objects, ... Emofurn.
