SARRI DESIGN | ALESSIO SARRI CERAMICS

Ceramics has a long tradition in Sesto Fiorentino and it is well set in the local culture. So it must have been naturally for Alessio Sarri to start working on ceramics, even if it was only experimentation of his artistic language when he began. He himself was born in a family where everybody worked on ceramics and attended the Art Institute at Porta Romana in Florence, graduating in painting.
His meeting and his co-operation with Matteo Thun offered Sarri new scenarios. One of the outcome of their collaboration is, for example, the vases collection Rara Avis. Another important result of their meeting is that Sarri was able to perceive that ceramics had relevant possibilities comparable with high level handicraft and he directed his work towards this new ideas, always testing new and difficult solutions.
However, Sarri's own artistic growth didn't prevent him form keeping on working on other artists' projects as well. For example, his co-operation with Ettore Sottsass gave birth to new greatly expressive objects, characterised by innovative design and refined technique. Their unusual edges, their accurate and sharp shape and a daring use of raw materials contributed to it. Besides, their use of flat and strong colours highlights even more the accuracy of their design. The colours used without any hesitation or any blurring, become an integral part of the complex structure of these objects. Black of Ur, for example, underlines the dramatic intersection of horizontal planes and focuses on the unstable balance of the shapes, while yellow seems to expand the exact composition of Samarra.
For the teapots Basilico and Lapislazzuli, the artists used fainter colours and matched sharp edges to curved lines.
Sarri's personal projects are softer. Two examples are the vases Beatrice and Berenice, awarded with the International Ceramics Competition Special Prize of Mino in Japan in 1998. Their rounded and soft shape collect so much lightness that they almost appear swollen and folded up on themselves despite the cleanness of their design.
