MACEF 2006. THE THIRD OBLIQUE WORKSHOP: GAROFOLI, DOOR HANDLE IN NEXT FUTURE

The final result of this third workshop, sponsored by Garofoli's (a well known brand among solid wood interior doors) edited by Oblique, a sort of laboratory connecting together designers and firms, will be represented by the shown-event directed by Massimo Marcelli, sponsored by ADI Marche, scheduled at Milan, during next Macef Autumn/Winter 2006.
The Oblique third issue (fist issue 2005) is paying tribute to Garofoli (sponsor), regarding interior door handles.

Some of the recent most representative projects successfully issued by Oblique, will be newly presented during the event, along with "Two Think" (two ideas for the same project), a creative mix between designers – the younger one and the famous one, both collaborating together at once – and company, to explore new languages through each phase of a brand new project, from the idea up to final product.

Press or pull, they both represent a very complicated action, throughout driven mechanisms, almost instinctive or even leaded by a handy motion as flexible as spontaneous it can be at the same time. This ritual concept "press or pull" is hardly explored out of outstanding high-tech innovations, as to door handles design and research is still standing between standard door handles (most of the existing offer) and market inputs, coming from new industrial processes and new high-tech solutions.

Oblique was born out an idea to invent a straight connection between designers and companies, being the virtual area (magazine issues), easy to identify, whereas projects, prototypes, ideas may concretely meet targets they are originally oriented (designers ideas -> companies). Oblique is thus essential to start a crucial connection in design, as the lonely key to open new perspectives for concrete collaborations.
The Garofoli's latest challenge – as a main sponsor – through Oblique has been launched, while 24 creative designers have been involved in this ambitious project of modelling new innovative ideas to be implemented in the existing wide range of its brand-oriented doors.
Innovation of shapes, materials, working processes or functionality as well, are main goals at once.

Quality has always been both a sort of primary task and a matter of success for Garofoli, the leading manufacturer of interior doors of solid wood.
Vanguard High technologies support nowadays Garofoli's success, thanks to constant research of wood high-quality finishings and top-level process output the Garofoli's product is positioned in high range market, in full respect of environment. Values as strong as fundamental are leading to brand's brightness such as business training courses, working environment, sale management trainings, permanent customer satisfaction tests.
The strategic boost impressed by Garofoli's management achieved the ISO 9001/2000 quality standard certificate in February 2001.
Growth and expansion of Garofoli's brand is based on over 200 employees, 8 kinds of door collections through more than 170 models, as to colours and finishings, distributed in various foreign Countries from Russia to Turkey, through Austria, Germany, Spain, France, North of Africa, Middle East and America.
The Company was established in 1968 at Castelfidardo producing wood frames for furniture at first and wardrobe doors for high-range kitchens later on. The production of solid wood was established in 1982, while new doors of MDF panels made by pantograph cope later on with market rising demand. The latter product ranges spread out the same spirit featuring Garofoli's mission, since it was established, as "to the top" is Garofoli's production process password too.
Each Garofoli's door is not only tangible quality but even solid wood well balanced between aesthetics and workmanship: each door is previously carefully designed, thus built, quality controlled and test certificated. Further aesthetic and structural features have been implemented in latest ranges establishing a new era for interior doors, thus keeping a craftmade origin in the industrial process, as a unique surplus value. That is why Fernando Garofoli personally carves his name on each door, to certify the quality spread out the industrial process into a unique multiple masterpiece.

28 projects were presented, being now available for the industrial sector:

Adrianodesign
Linea. Using metal manufacturing light technologies, reducing used material's deal to the least in manufacturing a product, giving lightness and trasparency to an object, they are Linea's strong points, a door handle designed by a metal wire that, conveniently bended, give character, neatness and formal lightness to the handle itself. Special attention it has been given to ergonomic topics, handle's hold and to the feeling and touching sensations that it can and must arouse into the user.
Linea turns out to be a new handle because of its technological and formal aspects, but tied up to an archetype that is intimate to all of us

Altromododesign
Softline. The integration of the handle with the lock and the absence of the common spin movement characterizes a product that deserves attention. An evolution of the existing system through the re-interpretation of the concept. The goal has been to re-design, on the base of the existing mechanism, the aesthetic of the system, turning particular attention to details, to simplicity and clearness of lines and to the transmitted tactile feelings. So the function is discovered through a soft surface, that hides the inner engine of all the system. The spin is replaced by a pleasant pressure. This combination of materials also offers a lot of possibility of approach with colours and finishes, answering therefore to the several customers demands.

Alessandra Baldereschi
Anello. Is either a door-handle and a knob in the same object. The shape, very easy and clean is suitable at any kind of door.
Cassaforte. In these years, the inclination to fear and to maniacal obsession for security theme have ridden carriers in a spectacular way.

Alessandro Busana
+xdoor. This particular doorknob is able to communicate to user open or looked position from considerable distance. The message goes through his clean and immediately design, when the door is open show the sign +, when the door is looked, sign X. The looked system is activated through the push-button integrated to doorknob. This doorknob has a communicative and decorative element that helps to avert embarrassing situations in office as to restaurant, in hotel like at home.
Snake. Decò doorknob inspired to homonym video game. Minimal and essential style for this project who considers the doorknob like a decorative element integrated into the door, for create a fusion between esthetic signs, and functionality aspect. From here one doorknob who penetrates in to the door wood for create geometric designs. That designs can changed for many model for created a recognizable family doors. Add more prestige to your door, incising your name into the aluminium band.

Angeletti Ruzza Design
Sinula. Is a straight filter between us and the spaces around, is the imprint of a hand shape in a snaky, organic, harmonious way.
The three essential handle mechanisms are well shaped by our use thanks to our memory, thus becoming a familiar instrument. By this way the tool is ready for use but talks as well; a control working for its function or its history, is just aware to be ready and grown-up.

Carlo Contin
Drops. Opening and shutting the door relates us twice with the handle element, through a latter mechanic act as you shift the handle, but even through a former tactile act at handle's touch. This project if straight oriented to the tactile handle touch, combining the handle traditional metal part to the amusing silicon touch effect. The metal touch is bypassed by a soft touch while small drops of silicon wrap the handle exterior.

Matteo Bazzicalupo with Chiara Ripalti
Soft cut and Soft eye. Both examples of a restyled handle/locking system by G'idea. One body composed by two functional and complemental shells but clearly different because of material, colour and touch.

Dodo Arslan
Balance. It can be simply pushed or pulled. At a glance, thanks to its inclination, it suggests the opening direction. The vertical handle, reachable by children and people on wheelchairs, also allows a safe hold, avoiding a horizontal wrist twist, typical of classical handles. You can even open it with an elbow when you have bags or while carrying a baby.
Balance, contrarily to the traditional handles, with their hook shape, isn't dangerous for kids' eyes. The chassis integrates the key hole, creating a protection against classical key scratches. This chassis permits a wide range of personalizations, meeting customers' specific needs by Integrating OEM electronic components as led, display and electronic keys, or working as a decorartive element. It can even be removed to show door's original material.

Enrico Azzimonti
People. A double handle characterized by a shape that enables simple and ergonomical instinctive actions. Its Y-shape is naturally perfect for a left-hander's hand, for the elbow when your hands are already holding some objects, for a child's hand pulling downwards.

Giulio Iacchetti
Blackhole handle. Mobile Handle designed in order to look like a keyhole, suitable to be taken away like a key, made of plastic or metal.

Gumdesign
Followme. A concept worked out for a door and its functionality. A new way to figure out the doorhandle. A graphic perception sign. Indicating the use.

Ilaria Marelli
I buchi. The handle disappears, and a hole appears in its place. The door is no more a barrier between two spaces: the handle reveals its nature of tool to give access to another room. Different symbols give the possibility to characterize the entry and what is the meaning for us of the room.

Joe Velluto + Eddy Antonello
Frame. Handle made by aluminium extrusion and turned hub.
Mrs hide. Handle with rosette that hides the opening and closing movement. For contract and interior. The stopper can be interchangeable.Made by die casting brass with 2 different finishes.

Lorenzo Palmeri
Piega. The hand slides inside the slot, where a hidden simple switch allows the door opening. Is an incorporated part of the door, as a small wave on its sleekly surface.

Luca Lattanzi
Rocks. The project of handle is a synthesis between a versatile aesthetic look or an easier way to assemble. The opening-shutting existing system it woks as always, the door-fixing system was either minimized to essential and simplified to the easiest possible way, while aesthetic is still inspiring shapes to be projected and materials to be selected.

Luca Spagnolo
04. The part of the doorhandle that we no longer see, gives shape to this project. A handle for everybody, but mainly for those aged 0-4 (hence the name of the project), that watch the word looking upwards. Drawings and characters come out of hiding from underneath the doorhandle, when the child reaches out to grab the handle and open the door.

Massimo Marcelli + Nicola Cerasa + Elena Caponi
NY. Thanks to the semi-rigid nylon it slides noiselessly into the door, making the door complete keeping its full basis functionality. The natural opening-shutting act is modified while use keeps conform to origin so that symbiosis between use and door is even stronger.

Matteo Pini
Squid. The project spread out the requirement to invent a new handle faraway from the existing ones, as to style, approaching to car door handles, as to shape. Differently from standard handles, Squid is well put in door and the mechanism does not work in the usual direction up-down to open the door. The shape, still prospectively, is inspired by style of Carlo Mollino; the buttons designed as a clog are working as opening system (as well as shutting system, instead of the standard key.

Matteo Ragni
hAAndle. One thought through a daily act, one item traditionally made of aluminium or brass now reshaped thanks to new materials. In honour of the Scandinavian design culture either of the Italian one, as to irony.

Nucleodesign (Piergiorgio Robino + Nicola Sophie Hütz)
Nica. It strengthens the concepts expressed in the innovation of the G'idea product. A various handle from all the other handles because it does not turn, presses the key to the center or it is pulled making to release the mechanism. The sign is soft elegant precious as a jewel to evidence for shape and dimension the diversity of the function

Roberto Giacomucci
Clip and Block. The projects are both representing different projects concept-oriented to the research of new uses, whereas the handle traditional function is now well oriented to a new performance-concept. Though being made of plastic the concept of use is highly privileged.

Roberto Semprini
K2. A handle born out of an acrobat game between overlapped volumes. Two sections of a cone angle-crossed at the slimmest part of the same section. A small instrument of domestic architecture for door use.

Tommaso Maggio
Ring. One handle willing to be touched, to amuse through its skin. One handle talking through its different finishings and colours. The project goal is to emphasize the touch, while the old tool, not cold any longer, is now riding the curves of present time, well surrounded by technological accessories and updated to changing times, where angles end look like the idea's border line and a lonely line is now designing Ring, bright and dark, empty space cross over a new dimension.
