 WATERFULL LIVING CONCEPT

This Degree thesis is one of the projects developed inside the Final Syntesis Design Studio: New Housing Sceneries, where have been faced the theme of contemporary living, observing new tendencies and planning typologies for the construction of the inhabited environment (...).
This thesis of Degree of Mario Ferrarini is placed as primary objective relationship among the environment bath and entire residence: integration, multi-functionality, spatial functional and formal fusion, are the themes around this project (…).
This is a project of research that it contains a certain grade of utopia in the general concept, but it is also a job very deepened by the point of view of the sketch and the technical feasibility, that investigates and develops in way a lot of scheming some aspects technological complexes, industrially still experimental.

Preliminary
In last decades housing scenery has suffered a progressive modication for fruition of the spaces: places first defined and bound from borders as kitchen, living room, bedroom, seem to mix themselves now.
Bathroom contrarily shows evolutionary limitations consequential from anthropological reasons and cultural conditionings:
private actions of the bodily functions, born by religious norms and social habits, force the individual to move away, to dispatch own physiological necessities from the social places.
This way happens if water closet is inside bathroom this taboo is extended to the whole one local: in bathroom we stay alone, or at most in two, where you can enter if someone have a bath or is in shower, but where obligatorily is denied entry when the water-closet is used.
Nevertheless, XIX century, still before reuniting themselves in an only room, equipments destined to the hygiene and bodycare were "mimetic instruments" harmonized inside the noble bedrooms.
The same harmony that tied environment night and hygienic it is proposed, in a certain sense as leitmotiv today in the bathroom project through a continuity, observable, for example, among bathroom and bedroom, that loosing consolidated imaginary to consider it as isolated scenery.
Waterfull Living Concept develops itself around analysis of the traditional bathroom and of behaviors that meet inside this environment (to read, to phone, to play, to change own suit, etc.). A followed of such analysis the bath is prefigured as antiseptic and standardized container, deprived of primitive values of water.
Deepening bathtub should transmit us sense of protection that calls us to the mind back, even though to unconscious level, the intrauterine life, primordial condition of absolute comfort.
A conception, this, that is translated of centrality of the bathtub, that goes to integrate with similar element-furnishes (bed, sofa, chaise-longue) to produce a convivial-area (wellness given by to be together) born as a deformation of space.
Formally similar sink-fitness zone it is regenerative area (where develop physical activity, washing, have a make up etc.) while a workplace is a generic table used for cooking, working or to eat, underlining that the attention for the food is by now entered to physical and mental conditions of individual wellness.
Horizontal development is interrupted by two multi-functional elements, two "totem", that makes possible, beyond usual hygienic actions (Water-coloset, bidet, shower), diversified activity, memory of that behaviors transferred to the traditional bath place.
With Waterfull Living Concept the bath can be lived, but also inhabited.

Waterfull Living Concept
Evening, entering home, we leave of the daily frenzy rhythms outside. Obviously desire is to relax ourselves, except then realize that we spends little time in our own residence seeking out the necessary incentives for body and mind regeneration: we do sporting activity or going to beauty center.

In this research of psico-physical wellness it develops a primary role relationship that is between man and water. This bond is already verifiable in classical and oriental cultures that, through thermal and public baths, have known how offer to collectivity the possibility of understand curative and regenerative benefits of the water.

While what happens in our housing scenario? Bathroom results structured around purely hygienic functions where, exception relax in the bathtub, it is totally nonexistent relationship with wellness.

Nevertheless we observe as into the bathroom some habits, normally develops ouside it, are transferred in as read a newspaper, make a reserved phone call, smoke or other.

For these reasons it is necessary to suit the bathroom for new demands of comfort and welness. The rearrangement intimately ties bathroom and all equipments inside, with the other environments of the house, to produce continuity and fusion among functions and in relationship to the space. Sense of wellness is so transferred from bathroom to the whole house..

Now must be intended as house and house as a bathroom: not only to live it, as already happens, but to live in.

Sink merges with the plan kitchen, with lunch table and desk office; bathtub sets simileswith sofa, chaise-longue and bed where relax and comfort result from a similar use.similar element-furnishes:

Shower, like a Turkish bath/sauna, can be seen how a locker room according with behaviors first analyzed (I can undress me, look into the mirror). Final water closet and bidet remember a seat (first sanitary were camoufiaged), a bench and trunk.

Defining metropolitan scenery as possible location I identify as 100 mqs is the housing solution projected.

Individualized the space everything have to remember harmony that water and deformations give: wave is formal reference of generation of the entire housing space.
The project results composed by stripes place side by side, horizontal elements born by floor deformation that generate to different heights backing for different equipments.
Contrasted "bright boxes" go to incorporate multiple functions. All these elements produces a new conception and perception of the home space.

Equipments have been studied for different spatial conformations.

In detail there are: a Regeneration area, a Workplace, a Wellness plate/convivial area and two Multi-functional totem.

(Regeneration area). Center of physical regenerative activities, recover of optimal physical condition through exercises on the fitness-bench or simply washing or do make up.

The double washbasin, with openable mirror is integrates with plan to exalt develop floor deformation.

The Workplace is a long element, apparently deprived of equipments for the adoption of plan electronic hobs perfectly integrated.
The attention for food is clearly belongs to the physical as well as mental condition of individual. This area shows him to all the effects as necessary to definition of a space built around wellness idea.

Center concept of water element, synonymous for excellence of healtcare: it isolates this convivial area tied up to the pleasure fruition of to be together.
Bathtub, sofa/chaise-longue and bed, result belonging to an only element.

To interrupt the horizontal development two Multi-functional totem. First one incorporates primary hygienic functions and a sink. Once time closed water closet and bidet appear as a seat that can be used as really liking.
In this configuration the hygienic area becomes passage corridor where momentarily take a seat.
External coat stand is visual call of the further possible use to the inside: totem is also locker room (equipped with bars and mirror).

Formally similar the other totem integrates standard functions of shower, sauna and Turkish bath. Externally a wall is bookstore, the opposite one is surface for video projection. Also here there is a inside-external relationship: outside bookstore call back to possible destination of use it internaly (reading room).
